It features my homemade absolutes of clays and soils I have tinctured for their unique aromas. These include: Multani Mitti clay from volcanic ash, Rhassoul clay from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, and sod (topsoil from my Vermont gardens). The sod from my garden has a mysterious agarwood note that becomes prominent after the soil has been upturned and left in the sun, and which I like to think of as an earthworm musk. One of the issues with natural perfumes is their tendency to evaporate rapidly, especially the volatile heart and top notes. The aroma of these thinner notes can be made to last longer by slowing down the evaporation rate with the application of one of my creamy fixatives. Each one contains its own fragrance composed exclusively of base notes, in an organic emulsion of raw beeswax, cold pressed natural oils, and unrefined, raw butters. These base notes come from oils and resins that are physically thicker, and thus diffuse over the course of days rather than hours. In addition to lasting longer themselves, viscous base notes tend to trap middle and top notes, releasing them languorously rather than quickly. Finally, in the spirit of true alchemy, base notes may exalt the volatile notes, meaning they will bring out their best features, not only drawing out the perfume in time and space, but transforming and elevating the creation entirely.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ed i r e c t i o n s\u003cbr\u003eTo use, rub a fixative balm into your skin prior to natural perfume application to seal in and strengthen the tenacity of the scent. Can be layered with scents, or worn alone. Pine, pine and more pine. The whole tree. And dirt. Those are the first and most prominent notes in Moss Northwest. There is something animalic in it as well, very close to the skin, like civet (though I doubt she used civet, since that's not a material found naturally in Vermont where she sources her materials). Pine trees can definitely impart something similar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis fragrance makes me feel like I’ve been sleeping outside for a few days, traipsing down dewy forest paths in Oregon and brushing up against conifer needles. There is a very strong dirt smell that makes home in the top of the sinus, falling down into the back of the tongue pallette, so I can taste it. I like that. It’s sort of like I’ve gotten caught up in a cloud of dirt. And I mean \u003cem\u003edirt,\u003c\/em\u003e not dirty. Like a garden and all its aluminosilicates in the soil (minus the fertilizer). You know when cats hold their mouths open to 'examine' an interesting smell? I think this might be close to what they experience when they do that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere’s also a sweaty aspect to it. Sweat from today and maybe some from a hike yesterday. It gives me that “I may not have showered today” drip and swag, even on days when I did, in fact, shower. And though the Northwest, especially in the forest, is cool and wet, there is something warm and dry to it, like a campfire. It’s cozy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater, a light sea spray emerges with a slightly waxy smell. We’re camping on the beach. I can hear the rumble of the low waves north of the Redwoods, see the foam, touch the shells.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a very realistic rendering of the forest near the upper west coast. Obviously, it is a very niche scent. It might offend some people, because it doesn’t leave out the filthier aspects of a day or longer spent in nature, but personally I love it. Even after the main characters have faded, there is still a warmth transferred from my skin to my nose. The pine wood lasts a long time.
