I'm excited to offer a pre-order of 'Thor' Sage Seeds (Salvia apiana x mellifera). This hybrid of white and black sage is open pollinated in the wilderness on our De Luz site. It is a favorite of our families of wild quail.
Thor sage has characteristics of both of its parents: the glaucous, powdery leaf feel of white sage and the bumpy, dinosaur skin textured leaves of black sage. The leaves are smaller than the white and larger than the black, with pointier tips than the black and more rounded than the white. Plant in well-draining soil with full sun. Hardy to zone 8b outdoors but can be overwintered indoors in cooler climates. Ships in May for spring planting.
Like many hybrids, the scent profile of Thor reflects the best qualities of each parent: It has our black sage's peppery fruit leather, strawberry skins, rhubarb pie, citrus and tamarind zest. It also possesses our white sage's volcanic minerality and granitic sand notes thanks to the soil on our property and the companion species of Engelmann and Southern California live oak, and the apple-turpentine scent of Laurel Sumac. There is a rich dryness that reminds me of an oil painter’s studio. Truly a marvel, with aromatic facets that echo its material facets of golden goo to green shards of botanical gemstones. Thor is a wonderful addition to any fragrant landscape and would sure to inspire the aromatic genie in incense and perfume compositions.
The scent of our Thor sage is singular because of the rare confluence of three soils found on our property: black volcanic, red volcanic, and decomposing granite.
