Viable Engelmann Oak acorns. Quercus engelmannii is an endangered white oak species native to southern California and Baja northern Mexico. The only remaining wild stands of significance are on the Santa Rosa Plateau (where I live) and Black Mountain. We have a robust colony on our property that drops acorns by the thousands (see photos). You can grow it outside or as a bonsai. These will sell fast as they are not often offered for sale online.

Engelmann Oaks have blue green leaves with furrowed gray bark. Its canopy is elliptical or rounded, and it may be deciduous during the summer if its roots do not reach an underground water source. Otherwise it is evergreen, the northernmost subtropical oak species. Grows to 25-60ft in ideal conditions. Plant in well-draining soil with full sun. Hard to zone 8 outdoors.

HOW TO GROW

Acorns prefer fall sowing in mulched beds to artificial stratification.

Scarification: soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours.

Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days or until radicle appears (germination).

After germination: sow acorn 3/4" deep in soil, tamp and mulch seed bed.

This is a recalcitrant seed that will need either refrigeration or immediate sowing. It is shipped in a damp paper towel. Seller is not responsible for shipping conditions or damage in transit.
