Black Sage Seeds, Wild, De Luz. Open pollinated Salvia mellifera. We have thriving wild colonies on our property that I steward by direct sowing and weeding around (see photos).
Black sage, Salvia mellifera, honey-bearing sage. Dinosaur skin textured leaves, from grass green to chartreuse, to dry rust the color of autumn. Plant in well-draining soil with full sun. Hardy to zone 9 outdoors but can be overwintered indoors in cooler climates.
Scent profile: peppery fruit leather, strawberry skins, rhubarb pie, citrus and tamarind zest. Some say it is a clean scent. The scent of our black sage is extremely unique because of the rare confluence of three soils found on our property: black volcanic, red volcanic, and decomposing granite.
