A brief celebration of one of the rarest, most complex, and most labor-intensive aromatic materials in my botanical palette.

Vanilla is never just vanilla.

An orchid fruit, cured into fragrance. Dark, resinous, floral, balsamic, buttery, boozy, woody, sometimes smoky or almost animalic. Vanilla can smell of warm milk and brown sugar, dried tobacco, old wood, rum-soaked fruit, leather, custard, orchid flesh, and sun-warmed skin.

One of perfumery's most recognizable materials is also one of its most misunderstood.

Natural vanilla is extraordinarily labor-intensive to produce. The flowers open briefly, often requiring hand pollination in cultivation. The pods develop over months, then undergo an extended process of curing, sweating, drying, and conditioning. Much of vanilla's aromatic complexity emerges through this transformation.

At Wild Veil, I work with different vanilla species, botanical origins, and extraction methods, including in-house absolutes, tinctures, and CO₂ extracts. Each reveals a different facet of the material: some dark and syrupy, others fruity, woody, leathery, floral, or quietly musky.
