Cantaloupe Absolute
Cucumis melo | Botanical Perfume Extract
Cantaloupe without its water.
A dense, concentrated expression of a fruit whose perfume is much stranger than its familiar sweetness suggests.
Fresh cantaloupe has a peculiar aromatic anatomy. Cool cucumber and green rind give way to orange flesh, dripping honey, nectar, and a soft, almost floral musk. There is something faintly bodily beneath its aqueous freshness. A warm, overripe intimacy that belongs as much to skin as to fruit.
In the absolute, that immense watery volume is compressed into a darker, more concentrated aromatic body.
Melon flesh becomes nectarous and thick. Honey takes on a deeper warmth. The green, cooling edges of the fruit contrast with its ripeness, while the musky undercurrent becomes especially intriguing: fleshy, humid, faintly animalic, suspended somewhere between tropical fruit and skin.
What interests me about cantaloupe is precisely this tension. Its fragrance is simultaneously cool and warm, watery and voluptuous, vegetal and almost bodily.
This absolute is one expression of that complexity.
I'm also studying cantaloupe through direct tincturing of the fresh fruit and spontaneous fermentation followed by fortification. Each process approaches the fruit at a different point in its aromatic existence.
The absolute concentrates. The fresh tincture attempts to preserve. Fermentation introduces the possibility of entirely new aromatic compounds and relationships.
Three different ways of listening to the same fruit.
